Summer Interns Should I Hire Coworkers Kids
Summer Interns Should I Hire Coworkers' Kids Q: Am I wrong to refuse to hire my coworkersâ kids as summer interns? I work for a small, family-owned company. This summer, Iâm in a position to hire a summer student â" strictly for the department I work in, and I have been given complete reign in terms of how I conduct the hiring process, including the interview process. Since the summer student in question will be directly answerable to me, Iâve decided to not hire any children of any coworkers in the office. My reasons are to avoid any conflict of interests â" especially from what I call the âmama bearâ or âpapa bearâ syndrome. For instance, if I give a perfectly legitimate task that the student just doesnât want to do, will he or she run to the parent to get involved and pipe up on behalf of their child? Or if I need to give a bad performance review (due to bad performance), will the parent once again get involved? The last thing we want is the child of a coworker coming in with an âentitlementâ attitude because they feel they can run to a parent the moment they feel the jobâs too tough or if they feel too much is demanded from them. This isnât sitting well with some coworkers who want to get their children in for the summer. Is my approach off base? A: There are loads of reasons to prefer not to hire children of coworkers. In addition to the concerns you mentioned, thereâs also the risk that your relationship with the parent may be affected if the intern doesnât like you, or feels that youâre treating her in a way thatâs unfair, or if you need to give critical feedback or even fire the intern or decline to give a positive reference in the future. Is that really not going to impact your relationship with their parent/your coworker? Itâs possible that the parent will be fantastic at maintaining a firewall between their relationship with you and whatever is going on between you and their kid, but thatâs something that can be tough to know in advance, and itâs reasonable to simply not want to take on that risk. (These are all the same reasons that you might decline to hire a coworkerâs spouse, too.) Iâd say this to coworkers who push you to reconsider: âIâm sure Jane is great. Iâd just feel too awkward managing the child of a coworker though; I want to be able to be unbiased and to give candid feedback without worrying about my relationship with the parent.â If the person insists that wonât be a problem and continues to push, you can add, âTo be honest, this is an example of what makes me uncomfortable about it. I think it would be tough to have an internâs parent here in the office advocating for them. Iâm just not comfortable with it, but I hope she finds something great this summer.â Q: I know my coworker secretly plans to quit after maternity leave. Should I say anything? A close friend coworker of mine is due with her second baby in July. We have a temp coming in to transition her work during her leave from June to October. She confided in me over lunch that 3 weeks after she comes back to work, she is resigning and moving across the country. This plan is elaborate and already in the works. I think taking months of maternity leave pay and benefits, knowing you are going to quit shortly thereafter (within 2 months), is robbery and a truly bad thing to do. I am on very good terms with our head of HR and talent. I feel bad keeping this secret. I know the temp coming in (former employee who saw grass isnât always greener) and strongly assume that she will want the full-time gig if presented to her after the current employeeâs departure. I assume I should keep my mouth shut, because it isnât my secret to share and the mom may change her mind (unlikely but of course, possible). What do you think? A: I agree that itâs a crappy thing to do (less so if itâs a large organization that can easily absorb the burden, and more so if itâs a small organization that will be more impacted), but the law does allow it. (Well, sort of; if an employee gives unequivocal notice that she wonât be returning to work at the end of the leave, the employerâs FMLA obligations do end.) To be clear, I donât have a problem with people doing this if theyâre not totally sure of their plans and think they might actually end up going back or want to keep that option open; my objection is only to situations like this one where itâs a certain plan and sheâs misleading people. As for whether you should tell HR: If youâre in a management role, you have more of an obligation to share what you know, but if youâre not, Iâd figure that she was talking to you as a friend and you should keep her confidence accordingly. These questions are adapted from ones that originally appeared on Ask a Manager. Some questions have been edited for length. More From Ask a Manager: Am I missing too much work when my kids are sick? Can I say something about my coworkerâs graphic, violent tattoo? When my coworkers âwork from home,â theyâre not really working

Revenue Velocity and Its Impact on Corporate Strategy
Revenue Velocity and Its Impact on Corporate StrategyRevenue Velocity and Its Impact on Corporate StrategySome securities brokerage firms, most notablyMerrill Lynch, have used revenue velocity for many decades asa key measure of profitability. In this formulation, velocity represents the return onclient assets. Originally, it wasproduction leistungspunktvelocity, or production credits divided by the client assets in custody (that is, on deposit) at the firm. Stated in another way, this version of velocity is the return on client assets enjoyed by the firm. As Applied at Merrill Lynch Velocitycalculations were made at the aggregate firm-wide level, for the entirebook of businessheld by a givenfinancial advisor, and for individual clients. Fluctuations in aggregate velocity were monitored very closely by the controllers organization and the management reporting systems, and forecasts of trends in velocity were critical inputs to predictive financial models and profit projections. A s the firmsmanagement reportingand profitability analysis systems and methodologies evolved and became mora sophisticated, more focus began to be placed on revenue velocity rather than production credit velocity. This became advisable as the firm imposed an increasing number of fees that did not generate production credits, and as executive management began to recognize that, in transactions where production credits were indeed awarded to the financial advisor, the actual ratio of production credits to underlying revenue could vary significantly by product. Velocity in Economics Velocity, as applied in securities brokerage firms, is an application of a concept in monetary economics called the velocity of money. This fundamental theorem posits that the total value of transactions in an economy equals the stock of money times its velocity or the rate at which it changes hands. The theorem is written in this form M x V P x Q Where M is the stock of money, V is the velocity of mone y, P is the average price per transaction and Q is the total quantity of transactions. The brokerage application can be written A x V R Where A is the value of client assets, V is the revenue velocity on those assets, and R is the total revenue earned. Impact on Corporate Strategy The upshot of the focus on the velocity at Merrill Lynch was the development of an asset gathering strategy, working on the theory that more client assets in custody would yield more revenue. Accordingly, the financial advisor compensation plan was adjusted, rewarding financial advisors for the collection of net new assets in their clients accounts. Additionally, studies by management science of revenue and profit velocity by client segment and by individual client led to yet more insights that challenged traditional marketing strategy. That is, it was found that velocity, however, measured, declined significantly as the assets of a client or client household rose. Part of this was the result of the d iscounts either negotiated by or automatically granted to high net worth clients. Partly this was the result of trading activity generally declining as a proportion of assets, as assets grew. In either case, significantly lower revenue and profit velocities among high net worth clients challenged the notion that gathering assets by courting them was a preferable strategy to accumulating the same amount of assets by seeking out larger numbers of smaller clients. Going the latter route would produce significantly higher velocities on the same aggregate amount of assets.
